Calais, the port town named in the title, is filed here under ballooning, which ties the town to one of the most celebrated flights of the early balloon era. On 7 January 1785, Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Jeffries crossed the English Channel from Dover and came down in the forest of Guînes, near Calais, after a dangerous flight that briefly required them to throw out ballast and clothing to stay aloft. The crossing drew wide attention across Europe and made Calais a lasting point of reference in the history of aviation. The record gives few other details, so the picture is best read as a view of the town connected to that moment in the history of flight.
