The only identifying detail for this negative is its title, Kumagae, a Japanese surname that the Bain News Service noted on the glass plate or its caption card. The record marks the name as unverified, so the sitter, date and occasion remain open. The Bain News Service was a New York news photography agency founded by George Grantham Bain, and its pictures in the early twentieth century covered politics, public figures, disasters and visiting dignitaries. Researchers hoping to pin down this image would need to check the caption cards and contemporary newspapers.
