The record names Kumage, a district in Yamaguchi Prefecture at the western end of Honshu, alongside tennis, so the scene probably shows a match or players there. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century, made many pictures of Japan, but its titles were often written from memory or secondhand, so this one is unverified. Tennis took hold in Japanese schools and clubs during those decades, which makes a picture like this a glimpse of sport outside the big cities. No date is recorded, so the exact moment remains uncertain.
