Dutch Leonard was a left-handed pitcher who worked for the Boston Red Sox in the 1910s, and this glass negative shows him as a player for that club. The plate came out of the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers covered baseball closely, and their negatives were often captioned on cards that were not always checked for accuracy, so the identification here comes from that unverified record. Glass plates like this one were the standard tool of press photographers before roll film became common.
