The building in this view housed the offices of Richmond & Backus Co., a Detroit firm in the stationery trade, which the cataloger's title and the subject heading both point to. The picture was made as a glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented the city and the wider Midwest for commercial sale. Its notation "R & B Co. 286 special" suggests it was taken to fill a particular order. Such street-level views of working commercial buildings from the early 1900s show how Detroit's downtown business district looked as wholesale and office trades expanded.
