*Moonbeams* is a sheet music cover, and its catalog record tags the scene as sentimental, with courting and music as its themes. Lithographed around 1879 and copyrighted by Oliver Ditson & Co., the Boston publisher, it belongs to the parlor song trade, when families bought printed songs to sing and play at home. Covers like this one had to catch the eye in a shop window, so their imagery often leaned on moonlight, romance and genteel leisure. The moon in the title points to mood and courtship rather than anything mystical.
