Few places in North America offered a better view of the northern lights than Dawson, which served as capital of Yukon Territory. Set at the junction of the Klondike and Yukon rivers, the town had boomed during the Gold Rush of the late 1890s and was still a remote frontier community in 1908. This photograph, copyrighted that year, shows an aurora borealis over Dawson, a sight residents saw often but that was hard to capture on the film and plates of the period. It survives as a record of how the sky looked over the town in the first decade of the twentieth century.
