Demons are the surprising subject of this color poster for James Ensor's December 1898 exhibition at the Salon des Cent on the Rue Bonaparte in Paris. The Salon des Cent was a Paris gallery that showed Symbolist and avant-garde painters, and Ensor, a Belgian artist from Ostend, was known for crowds of masks, skeletons and grotesque figures that unsettled academic taste. The record dates the print to Brussels in 1896, a bracketed estimate, so it may predate the Paris show it advertises. Its lithographic color and occult imagery make it a useful example of how artists promoted their work before modern advertising.
