The figure here is Astronomy personified, shown through a posed allegorical figure rather than through telescopes or observatory scenes, a common way late nineteenth-century studio photographers presented the sciences. The Boston firm Curtis & Cameron, which issued photographic prints of this kind, copyrighted the image around 1898. Such tableaux drew on a long tradition of painted allegories of the arts and sciences, which the camera made cheap to reproduce for parlor walls and art study. Today the staging reads as a sign of how popular culture pictured learning as elegant and symbolic.
