Britevale is the brand name that distinguishes this label from the many other apple crate labels that show similar orchard scenes. The Okanogan Valley in north-central Washington became a commercial apple district after irrigation made its dry hillsides productive in the early twentieth century, and growers there sent fruit by rail to buyers across the country. Crate labels like this one were color-lithographed paper pasted onto wooden boxes, so they served as advertising as well as shipping identification. The printed brand, the region name, and the artwork together show how growers presented their fruit to buyers.
