Crate labels like this one, with the name "Blue Winner" set across the top, were pasted onto wooden boxes of apples packed in the Okanogan Valley of north-central Washington. The valley's irrigated orchards, fed by the Okanogan River and its tributaries, grew large volumes of fruit in the early twentieth century, and the region's growers shipped much of it by rail to eastern markets. Labels like this one were meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded fruit stand, so their bright colors and bold lettering were as much advertising as identification. Today they are valued as small records of regional agriculture and of the commercial art that sold it.
