Blue Grouse, a ground-dwelling bird of western North American forests, gives this crate label its name and a sense of place, a habit many fruit brands of the period shared when they borrowed from local wildlife and scenery. Labels like this were lithographed in bright colors and pasted to wooden crates so buyers in distant cities could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Canadian orchards were shipping apples by rail to prairie and eastern markets by the early twentieth century, and labels of this kind were part of that trade, worth noticing for their color printing and their blend of commercial and regional imagery.
