Three British Columbia communities appear on this label: Kelowna, Oliver and Osoyoos, all in the Okanagan Valley. The shipper, McLean & Fitzpatrick, sold its fruit under the broad banner "Canadian Apples," a phrase meant to reassure buyers far from the orchards. Labels like this were printed in bright colors and pasted onto wooden crates so that a grocer or customer could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. The irrigated valleys of the Okanagan became one of Canada's major apple-growing regions, and crate labels from that era now record how fruit was marketed before brand packaging became common.
