A horse identified as a "charity horse" during hot weather in New York City is the subject named in this record, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives and has not been independently verified. Urban horses of the early twentieth century hauled carts, wagons and delivery loads through summer heat, and charitable groups in American cities often campaigned for water troughs, shade and rest for them. George Grantham Bain's agency sold news photographs to newspapers, so scenes like this were made for quick publication. The glass negative preserves fine detail in the animal's coat and harness.
