The two women named in this picture, Madame Nano and Lucienne, are identified by a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, a detail not yet independently verified. The image is on a glass plate, which the Washington, D.C., firm used for its portraits and commercial photographs, and the date of about 1923 comes from other negatives in the same range. The collection reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Look for faint streaks and blemishes, which result from natural deterioration in the original coatings on the glass.
