Few stories gave Victorian theatergoers more wonder than *Aladdin*, the tale of a poor boy who rubs a lamp and summons a genie, and this color poster advertises a stage production of it. David Allen & Sons of Harrow printed it, a firm that produced many of Britain's theatrical posters in the 1890s and was known for bold lithographed color. *Aladdin*, drawn from the *Arabian Nights*, was a staple of the British Christmas pantomime, where spectacle, transformations and sudden stage effects drew large family audiences. The lamp and its genie make the subject a natural fit for a board on stage magic.
