This French poster promotes *Houdini, le maître du mystère*, the French title for the 1919 Universal serial *The Master Mystery*, in which Harry Houdini played a detective pursuing a criminal gang. The escape artist was at the height of his fame, and the film let audiences see his daring stunts on screen rather than only on stage. The poster was printed in Paris by Daude Frères, a firm that produced many of the color film posters circulating in France in the 1910s and early 1920s. Its bold hand-drawn style reflects how such posters were designed to catch the eye of passersby on city streets.
