Where the other apple pictures on this board show fruit on its own, this one centers a woman in the act of paring an apple, which the title "Woman paring apple, no. 2" makes clear. It is a platinum print, a process valued for its soft tones and matte surface, and the Library of Congress dates it to about 1930, though that date comes from an unverified caption card. The print was a 1935 gift from the Doris Ulmann Foundation. Ulmann, a New York portrait photographer, later turned her camera to rural life in Appalachia and the South, and scenes of everyday household work like this one reflect that interest.
