Crate labels like this one were printed to sell apples across the country, and this example bears the name of the Pacific Fruit & Produce Co., a shipper whose brand was meant to catch the eye of buyers at crowded wholesale and grocery counters. Labels of this kind were usually lithographed in bright color, with fruit, landscapes, or orchard scenes that promised quality and a place of origin. Because the paper was pasted onto the ends of wooden crates, few survived intact, which makes a surviving label a useful record of how growers marketed their fruit in the early twentieth century.
