Crate labels like this one, printed in bright chromolithography, were pasted onto wooden apple boxes so that buyers in distant cities could tell one grower's fruit from another's. The "Eatum" name is what sets this label apart from the many apple labels on the board, and the "Produce of U.S.A." line marks it as a shipping label meant to reassure buyers about where the fruit came from. Labels of this kind were a major part of early twentieth-century fruit marketing, when growers in orchard regions sent apples by rail to urban grocers and wholesalers. Brand names and eye-catching illustrations helped a crate stand out on a crowded platform or store shelf, and today these labels document how producers tried to build loyalty to a name rather than to a bushel of apples.
