Crate labels like this one for Tom Tit Brand apples were pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping crates so buyers could tell the fruit's origin and grower at a glance. The "Produce of U.S.A." line reflects the patriotic, export-minded language common on American produce labels in the early twentieth century, when railroads and refrigerated cars carried apples from orchard regions to distant city markets. Chromolithographed labels like this one were printed in bright colors to catch the eye on crowded grocers' shelves and in train yards, and many of them now survive mainly as collectibles that show how fruit was marketed before modern packaging took over.
