Rather than a plain street plan, this 1891 pictorial map presents Manhattan as a busy, illustrated whole, with the island's streets, piers and buildings packed onto a single sheet. The statue was dedicated on Bedloe's Island in October 1886, only five years before this map, so by then it had become the harbor's most recognizable symbol. Pictorial maps of the late 1800s often mixed geography with commerce and civic pride, so the map is worth reading for what it chose to emphasize as much as for its layout.
