Rather than a battlefield or a parade, this 1915 color lithograph shows a quiet English village, drawn by the painter George Clausen, R.A., who was known for his scenes of rural life. The London Underground railways issued it as a reminder of home for passengers who had gone to France and other parts of the world on important business. Its gentle pastoral view was meant to stir homesickness and loyalty at a time when Britain was raising its wartime forces, and it is a good example of how recruiting posters borrowed the imagery of the countryside. Notice how the calm scene of cottages and fields carries the emotional weight of the appeal.
