Rabbits in a street band, marching with drums, horns and fiddles, turn the usual Easter bunny into a small parade of musicians. Pictures like this were popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when printers produced sentimental holiday cards and illustrated books that gave animals human clothes and jobs. The Easter hare itself came to America with German immigrants, who brought the custom of an egg-laying rabbit that children looked for in spring. Images of animal bands also drew on the older tradition of the street musician, a familiar figure in cities and towns, so the scene would have been easy for viewers to recognize and enjoy.
