Dressed rabbits in human clothing were a favorite motif on Easter greeting cards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when printers in Europe and the United States produced them in large numbers. Anthropomorphic animals, often shown in waistcoats, bonnets, or holding eggs, drew on the popularity of illustrated children's books and fables of the period. Rabbits and eggs had long been linked with spring and fertility, and the card's sentimental tone reflects a time when holiday greetings were prized as keepsakes. Such cards were often tucked into letters or displayed on mantels during the holiday season.
