A midshipman in a heavy knit sweater stands in the foreground of this 1902 picture, with ships moored behind him at Annapolis. The Naval Academy there trained the Navy's officers, and its students, known as midshipmen, were a familiar sight in the town. The image belongs to the Thanksgiving sports parades category, a reminder that the football rivalries of the period were often celebrated with public processions and displays of school spirit. Its sweater and the ships at anchor give a clear sense of the academy's setting at the turn of the century.
