A young player in a sweater emblazoned with a large letter I stands before Illinois Field, holding a football, in this 1902 color poster. Bristow Adams drew it, and the Potomac Press in Washington, D.C., printed it, which suggests it was meant to publicize college football beyond the campus. Around 1900 the game was still rough and loosely regulated, and Thanksgiving Day games were among its biggest dates, drawing students, alumni and local crowds. Notice the bold lettering and flat blocks of color, which were typical of sports graphics of the period.
