Football in 1916 was a rough, fast-growing pastime, and crowds packed stadiums on holidays like Thanksgiving to watch college teams square off. The game then looked very different from today: players wore leather helmets with few protections, forward passing was still new and limited, and mass formations often produced heavy collisions at the line. Pictures like this one capture the energy of those holiday contests, when the stands filled with spectators and the sport was steadily shaping into the game Americans know now.
