The title ties this glass negative to the U.S. Navy and the name Maine, most likely the battleship USS Maine, though the caption data is unverified and the record gives no date. That ship exploded and sank in Havana harbor in February 1898, an event that helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War and made the name familiar across the country. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose glass plates were later gathered into the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Because the date is missing, the identification should be read as a working guess rather than a settled fact.
