The title on this glass negative, "IOWA U.S.N.," most likely refers to a United States Navy ship named Iowa, though the record does not date the picture or confirm the vessel. The Bain News Service, the New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, produced many images of naval ships for newspaper use in the early 1900s. Because the title comes from caption data the agency wrote that has not been independently verified, the exact ship and occasion remain open. Negatives of this kind were the working format of news photographers of the period, so details such as rigging, deck fittings and any figures on the dock are worth examining closely.
