Three of the principal figures in the Cuban Missile Crisis are cast as gunfighters in this drawing, with Fidel Castro, John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev squaring off as if on a dusty frontier street. It is rendered in India ink over pencil on illustration board, a method typical of editorial cartoons of the period. The record dates its publication to October 24, 1962, two days after Kennedy announced a naval quarantine of Cuba, when the standoff over Soviet missiles on the island was at its most tense. Dueling and gunfight imagery was a familiar shorthand for brinkmanship in Cold War cartoons, and the frontier metaphor makes the stakes of that week easy to read at a glance.
