Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1850 was a small river town at the southern end of Lake Winnebago, where the Fox River flows out toward Green Bay. Wisconsin had become a state only two years earlier, in 1848, and the land around the town had recently been opened to settlement after the Menominee and other nations ceded their claims. The Fox River's falling water powered early sawmills, and lumber from the northern pine forests was already shaping the local economy and drawing new arrivals. Steamboats and sailing vessels on the lake carried goods and settlers, linking the place to the wider trade moving through Green Bay and Milwaukee. Residents of the period would have known Oshkosh as a frontier outpost on the river, one whose future rested on timber, water, and the steady flow of people moving west.
