A ten-year-old newsboy, or "newsie," is the subject here, a common sight on American city streets in the early 1900s, when young boys sold papers on corners and near busy stations. Many of these boys worked long hours to help support their families, and the trade drew the attention of reformers, including photographers such as Lewis Hine, who documented child labor for the National Child Labor Committee. The newsboys' world also found a later audience in film: the 1899 New York newsboys' strike inspired the 1992 Disney musical *Newsies*, which helps explain this picture's place on the movies and film board.
