Owatonna's courthouse, the seat of Steele County in south-central Minnesota, is the subject of this souvenir view, which a caption card dates to about 1907. The card's details have not been independently checked. Small publishers such as the Albert Lea Souvenir Company issued series of printed views of local buildings and streets, sold to residents and visitors as keepsakes. In the early twentieth century, the courthouse was usually the most prominent public building on its town square, so views like this one show how communities displayed their civic pride.
