Walter Reuther and George Meany are the two figures this poster's subject headings name, and the word "merger" in its title points to the reunification they helped bring about. The AFL and CIO had split in the 1930s over how to organize workers, and they came back together in 1955 at a convention in New York City that formed the AFL-CIO, with Meany as its first president. This reproduction of a painting belongs to a series called *This Union Cause*, a campaign that used commissioned art to make the case for organized labor. The catalog dates it only to a range between 1965 and 1980, so it was likely printed well after the merger itself.
