The title points to a Rochester centennial and a woman identified only as "Miss R.," but the Bain News Service marked that title as unverified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain. Rochester, New York, was settled in 1812 along the Genesee River, and a centennial observance in the early twentieth century would have marked that founding, perhaps with parades, pageants, or costumed participants. The image comes from George Grantham Bain's news service, which supplied press photographs to newspapers from about 1900 into the 1910s. Glass negatives of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, hold fine detail, so the dress and setting are worth a close look.
