The name on the storefront and the apples on the board point to a grocery in Lincoln, Nebraska, photographed around 1942. John Vachon made the image while working for the federal government's documentary photography program, and the color slide reached the collection through the U.S. Office of War Information. Color film was still uncommon for government documentation at the time, so the slide preserves the bright reds and greens of produce that black-and-white pictures of the same period could not show. The year places the scene in the early years of American involvement in World War II, when wartime demand and new rationing rules were beginning to shape what shoppers found on grocery shelves.
