This wood engraving shows crews laying railroad track at night at Elberon, on the New Jersey shore, on September 5, 1881. The work was tied to the final weeks of President James A. Garfield, who was lying ill at a cottage in Elberon after being shot in July. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran the image on September 24, 1881, working from sketches by one of its staff artists. Because the scene was drawn on the spot, it offers a rare view of the lamplit labor behind a national story.
