This color lithograph from 1916 shows German warships in the waters off German East Africa, a theater that most Western readers overlook. The poster's title, "Blockade-breaker," points to the central problem of the German position there: the Royal Navy kept the coast closed, so German ships depended on slipping past patrols to bring supplies in. Posters like this were produced in Germany during the war to present the navy as active and resourceful, even as its squadrons in the region were being cut off. The cruiser *Königsberg*, trapped in the Rufiji delta and sunk in 1915, is the best-known example of how the struggle for these coastal waters ended.
