Herbert Hoover's 1928 campaign train stop in Trenton, New Jersey, is the particular moment captured here, with the candidate and his family shown during a leg of his eastern speaking tour. Whistle-stop campaigning, in which a nominee traveled by rail and spoke briefly from the back of a train platform at each town, was the standard way to reach voters before radio and television reshaped politics. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that produced large numbers of news and portrait photographs in the period, made the picture, and its crowds and family group show how personal these appearances were meant to feel.
