This 1928 photograph records Herbert Hoover's Republican campaign stop in Newark, New Jersey, a city the headline calls a Democratic stronghold, with thousands of people turning out to cheer him. Hoover ran for president that year against Democrat Al Smith, and like most candidates of the era he relied on whistle-stop tours, speaking from train platforms to crowds gathered at stations. The record names Lou Henry Hoover among the travelers, so the picture also shows the candidate's wife on the campaign trail, which was less common for political spouses at the time.
