Few Christmas pictures of the 1890s show Santa Claus at a telephone, which sets this stereograph apart from the usual chimney and sleigh scenes. B.W. Kilburn of Littleton, New Hampshire, issued the card around 1897, when telephones were still a novelty in many homes. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope in parlors, where two nearly identical photographs merged into one three-dimensional scene. Kilburn's firm was known for staged humorous scenes as well as landscapes, and this one turns a modern invention into a seasonal joke.
