This glass negative is catalogued under the name Anita Baldwin, a Southern California heiress and daughter of the land speculator Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, whose Rancho Santa Anita covered a large part of what is now Arcadia. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active in the early twentieth century, supplied without verification. Bain's files were built for newspaper and magazine clients, so portraits like this one document the public faces of the era's wealthy families and the people who made news in them.
