Labeled only "C.B. Buxton," this glass negative carries a title that the Library of Congress notes was taken from unverified data supplied by the Bain News Service. George Grantham Bain founded that New York news photo agency in 1899, and it sent pictures of public figures, events and everyday scenes to newspapers through the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the occasion and the sitter remain uncertain, but the glass plate format fits the agency's working years. Comparing it with other Bain negatives can help place it more firmly in time.
