The title asks a blunt question, how much it would cost to save these little lives, and the record dates it to 1917, when the war had left children across Europe and the Near East without parents or enough food. Appeals like this one used the figure of a helpless child to turn distant suffering into a request for money, a method relief organizations of the period relied on heavily. Notice how the words do much of the persuading: they name loss and hunger first and only then the price of rescue. Today it stands as a reminder of how wartime charity was often sold through urgency and emotion.
