Lead with the slogan itself: "Be Patriotic: Sign Your Country's Pledge to Save the Food" asks the viewer to treat a personal promise about groceries as a civic duty. The 1918 date places it in the last year of the First World War, when the United States Food Administration, led by Herbert Hoover, urged households to cut back on wheat, meat, sugar and fats so that supplies could go to American troops and Allied countries in Europe. Households were invited to sign pledge cards committing to these savings, and posters like this one were displayed in shops, schools and public spaces to encourage participation. The message reflects how the war reached into home kitchens as well as the battlefield.
