A daguerreotype from 1844 shows an unidentified man, and the record gives us little beyond that: no name, no sitter's story, and no maker. Still, the picture is a window onto a remarkable moment in photography, only about five years after Louis Daguerre publicly introduced his process in 1839. Daguerreotypes were unique silver-plated copper plates, each one a single image that could not be duplicated, and sitters often had to hold still for long exposures. Portraits like this one were typically kept in small cases, so the sitter's face appears only when the plate is tilted to the light.
