Understanding the arts" is a 1936 silkscreen poster credited to Shari and produced for the Federal theater Project, one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, which was renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939. Its subject, art education, reflects the New Deal belief that cultural programs should reach ordinary people, not only urban audiences with money for tickets. A date stamp on the back, January 8, 1942, shows that this copy was handled and filed several years after it was printed, when posters like this were still circulating in public use.
