Fog signal buildings like this one stood beside lighthouses and sent out sound when thick weather hid the light. The structure shown here is a white building with chimneys and horns, the mechanical part of a warning system that mariners relied on before radio beacons and modern electronic aids. Horns were typically powered by steam or compressed air, and their deep blasts could carry through fog where a lamp's beam could not. Keepers ran these systems for long stretches, often through the worst weather, so the building's plain, practical form reflects its job more than any decoration.
