This glass negative captures O.J. Kvale, a Minnesota congressman, on November 26, 1923, a date recorded on the plate itself. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work from a Washington studio that documented public officials and events in the early twentieth century. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of that era, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the surface come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings. The plate was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947.
